Who is behind the maps

My name is Dion Kucera. I hold a PhD in ecology and have spent the better part of a decade working with satellite imagery, spatial analysis, and geographic data. My scientific work involves extracting meaning from the Earth's surface using remote sensing — methods used by NASA, USGS, and research institutions to understand how landscapes change over time. The Atlas Blanket is the creative expression of this work, showing what happens when that data comes home.

What makes this different

Most products described as topographic use a generic contour pattern — a texture that evokes maps without representing a specific place. The Atlas Blanket is built differently. Each design begins with a real digital elevation model: a dataset that records terrain elevation across the landscape.

From that source data, I generate contours at a defined interval and compose them with hillshade, coordinates, and typography for the proportions of a blanket. The visual styling is deliberate, but the terrain geometry is not drawn from imagination.

  • Data sourcing

    Elevation data is sourced from public scientific archives, including NASA and USGS datasets. The geographic extent and contour interval are chosen to capture a meaningful view of each location.

  • Cartographic design

    Using professional GIS software, the raw elevation data is processed into a complete map layout — contour lines, labels, coordinates, and typography — designed specifically for the dimensions and proportions of a full-size blanket.

  • Production

    The finished artwork is printed using dye sublimation on a smooth fabric face with a soft gray flannel fleece reverse and gray bound edge.

A note on AI

These designs are not AI-generated. They are not artistic interpretations or algorithmically assembled aesthetics. They are the product of real scientific data and deliberate human cartographic judgment. If you want a topo pattern, there are many options. If you want the actual shape of the Matterhorn on your couch, this is it.
